In 1888, the people in this area had to travel by horse and buggy to National City to attend services. So, they decided to start a Sunday School. The Banana and National Avenue building in Tijuana Valley quickly became too small. They organized a church called the Tijuana Valley Methodist Church a few months later. The church initially met in a building in the town of Oneonta, which is now Ream Field, until the building at its current location was completed. The original building included a sanctuary, a belfry entranceway, and a Sunday School room. This building served the congregation and several pastors until 1928 when the Fellowship Room and a kitchen were added.
